Last week Funds For Learning® filed a detailed analysis of E-rate Funding Year 2013 requests for telecommunications and Internet access services with the FCC. The report focused on requests filed by schools or school districts and did not include libraries or consortia requests. One of the charts included in the report provided a summary of requests by state reporting the enrollment, the amount requested, and the per student and per building amounts.
The state with the highest reported student enrollment count – California, with 6,446,412 students – requested the highest amount of money, filing for a total of $331,346,627. This averages out to $51.40 in requests per student in the state of California, slightly more than the national average of $42.68. The state with the highest average request per student was Alaska, which requested $390.32 per student; the state with the lowest per-student request is Utah, with $11.04 per student. The report reveals a very wide disparity in the cost to provide telecommunications and Internet services to students across the country.
