On July 13, 2018, Senator Jones (D-AL) sent a letter to FCC Chairman Pai expressing concern that the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) is withholding “$32.4 million in E-rate discount funding from the State of Alabama.” This letter comes on the heels of Governor Ivey sending a similar letter to the FCC Chairman Pai in June. Senator Jones strongly supports the E-rate program and he stated to Chairman Pai that the E-rate program “plays a critical role in providing Alabama schools and libraries with affordable high-speed Internet access.” However, Senator Jones also believes the delays are “inexcusable” and hurting the students in Alabama.
