On Tuesday, March 6, 2017, the FCC Chairman Pai proposed directing nearly $1 billion in Universal Service funds to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to “restore and expand communications networks in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.” This comes soon after the FCC provided additional E-rate relief to Puerto Rico schools and libraries. The FCC opened a second filing window for those E-rate applicants that were negatively impacted by the fall 2017 hurricanes. The second FY2017 filing window opened on November 13 and closed on December 13, 2017.
The new plan would have to be approved by the FCC before moving forward. Further details of this new proposal can be viewed here.
