On October 23, 2017, First Lady Melania Trump visited Orchard Lake Middle School in West Bloomfield, Michigan to have a conversation with the students about treating other students with kindness and respect. This visit is a coordinated effort as part of the National Bullying Prevention Month which runs through October. Mrs. Trump talked to the students about bullying and how they can help other students feel less isolated and alone. On September 20, 2017 Mrs. Trump spoke at the United Nations and talked more specifically about the negative impacts of cyber-bullying.
Every school district that receives E-rate funds for Internet access is also required to be compliant with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Among the CIPA requirements is that school districts must have an Internet Safety Policy and educate their students about cyber-bullying awareness. In fact, school officials certify they are compliant with this requirement by submitting their Form 486. The Form 486 must be submitted to the SLD 120 days from when a funding commitment is received or when services start, whichever is later.
Further information on the requirements of CIPA can be viewed here.
