On June 20, 2017, the FCC Commissioners testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services regarding their FY 2018 Budget request. The FCC is requesting $322 million, $17.8 million less, for FY 2018 which is a 5.2% decrease compared to FY 2017. Most of the hearing was allotted to the Commissioners affirming how the FCC would continue to meet their core functions with the lower budget numbers.
Chairman Pai stated that his number one focus will be on closing the digital divide. In answering questions about his priorities and how he plans on meeting the FCC’s goals in FY2018, Pai gave a specific example citing E-rate appeals, how the FCC can manage to function effectively. Pai noted that the Commission will continue to allocate and shift resources where they deem necessary. The Chairman cited the unacceptable FCC E-rate appeal backlog as an example that he will provide the Wireline Competition Bureau the resources to complete many of the appeals that are even well over 10 years old.
The calendar year for Federal Government agencies runs from October 1 through September 30.
