The FCC released their 2018 Broadband Deployment Report on February 2, 2018, as mandated by Section 706 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Section 706 of the Act requires that the FCC “….determine annually whether advanced telecommunications capability is being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion…”. The Commission is further required to report on broadband deployment in our nations elementary and second schools and classrooms.
The FCC relied upon publicly available data from the EducationSuperHighway’s 2017 State of the State’s Report and the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) 2017 Annual Infrastructure Survey Report. The FCC stated that according to the EducationSuperHighway Report, six percent of public school districts and 6.5 million students are not receiving broadband services that meet the short-term connectivity goals laid out by the 2015 FCC E-rate Modernization Order.
In addition, Funds For Learning recently released their annual E-rate Survey results and will be conducting a webinar on February 14 at 3pm EST, to take a look at where the E-rate program is and where it is headed, based on the latest funding data and the recent Survey results. The upcoming webinar will also touch on Funds For Learning’s analysis regarding E-rate services and solutions schools have purchased this past year.
