FCC Chairman Requests Additional Resources for USF Oversight

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin testified in front of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government this week regarding the FCC's FY 2008 budget request. The FCC is seeking an additional $1 million for the Office of Inspector General's office to combat waste, fraud and abuse within the Universal Service Program. The funds would be used to add personnel and to purchase software to properly process audits.

The FCC is also seeking an additional $20 million to be transferred from the Universal Service fund to be used to strengthen their oversight abilities. The additional resources will allow the FCC to contract with outside auditing firms to perform further audits of program beneficiaries. The FCC won't know the status of their FY 2008 budget until later this year.
